RE: Samuel Tivey

Hi John, Samuel Tivey is my gr gr grandfather also. What I know is as follows. He is the son of Edward Tivey and Sarah? (she passed away when Samuel migrated). Samuel was christened 5-12-1814 at Melbourne, Derbyshire. He married Phoebe Wild (born 1810 Derby) on 9-2-1833 at St Werbergh, Derby. Her parents were Thomas Wylde and Ellen? Both deceased at time of migrating. (Note spelling difference). Shipping records show Samuel was a lace maker and Phoebe was a silk winder. Phoebe was also listed as ‘delicate’. They were both listed as Baptists. Samuel could read and write, Phoebe read only and all the children of school age could also read and write. Shipping record shows; James, houseservant 14 years, Derby; Alfred – 11 years; Sarah 9 years; Elizabeth 7 years and Harriet 11 months. All these children were born in Nottinghamshire. They arrived on Bermondsey 9-12-1848 at Sydney(reel 2135, 2148) I also found Joseph c 21.2.1834 who didn’t arrive with them. It would put him at 14 years of age as James. They also had an Ellen and an Anne born in Australia? When? Samuel Tivey died 15-11-1876 at Crankies Plains near Bombala, with the profession of grazier. It says his father Edward was a farmer. He died age 62 of apoplexy, duration of 6 days. Buried at Bombala, Wesleyan. Says he had 3 males living, 1 male deceased and 1 female deceased. Phoebe died 31-8-1878 at Elmsley near Bombala, age 67 of ‘inflammation of the lungs’. Length of illness was 3 days. Buried Bombala, Presbyterian. Children were listed the same as for Samuel’s death certificate. I am descended from Harriet Tivey who married Jonas Alcock, married at Monaro on 16-2-1867. On their marriage certificate it lists Samuel Tivey as a squatter at Doolondondoo, Moles Station. He gave Harriet consent to be married as she was under the age of 21. They married C of E. Harriet and Jonas had 8 children. Harriet died on 21-6-1884, 12 days after giving birth to #8child, who was my grandfather of peritonitis; a childbirth related complication. She died at Brown Mountain. It lists Samuel’s occupation as grazier. All the best. Louise

Email from Enid Andrews 23 Jan 2012 re Tivey

Thank you for your prompt response.

I will send my corrections and information to Ian as you have suggested.

The following may be of interest to you as it is family history I learnt when visiting Tosti McGown in 1982:

Samuel Tivey and family came to Australia following the recommendation of their Doctor to improve the health of either Samuel or Alfred who had bronchitis.

Tosti remembered reading the diary of the voyage out here just after she was married. She remembered "being toed down the Thames". It was indeed interesting to read this very diary you have submitted.

The Tiveys owned lace mills in Nottingham. The money from the sale enabled Samuel to purchase property in Nimmitabel.

Alfred Tivey bought a property at Nimmitabel known as Moles Station. Alfred did not like farming, he liked cattle. Just before Alfred died the property was snowed in for 3 weeks and 1800 cattle were lost. Alfred and Eliza gave a donation to build a Church at Nimmitabel? and this is recorded on the pulpit.

Alfred was more hesitant than Eliza in taking a leap.

Alfred married Eliza Ann White. Eliza came to live with Tosti's Grandmother Green when she was 10. Tosti thought Eliza's mother was blind.

Alfred and Eliza's children : Edie did not marry.

Tom went to the Boer War and never married. Tom went to Queensland.

Amy Violet had a nice singing voice and had a lot to do with Tosti when a child. Amy did not marry.

Edie and Amy later had a boarding house in Bundanoon.

Alfred "Alf" was killed in WW1 by a Vickers machine gun after 3 minutes at the front line. His sister, Ruby had a dream about Alf but

could not see his lower face. It was learnt later that the lower part of his face had been blown away.

Twins Ruby and Pearl. Ruby is Tosti's mother. Pearl drowned when she was 20 months old. Ruby and Pearl got out through the picket

fence and went down to the Kybeyan River. When Ruby was found she was pointing to the river and saying "Pearl Pearl".

When Ruby was 72 years old she walked in her sleep and woke up in the river where Pearl had drowned.

All the Tiveys had a lot of dignity about them.

All the children were great readers learnt latin roots and sums. They could write a good letter. Ruby wrote the best letter.

Ruby and Amy were taught by Henry George Elphick.

Myra (Ellen Myra) was a wonderful horse rider and probably the best of all the girls.

Greenbrook Station - Tosti's English Grandmother planted many English trees including a Greenbrook Cypress and a red baby rose without thorns, almond trees and poplars along the river banks.

Tosti and Jack McGown built their home at East Lindfield in 1936-7. They had 4 children. Their eldest , a girl, was born exaltly 100 years after Alfred Tivey on the

22nd December 1936. (Monaro Pioneers website has Alfred born on 23 December and I cannot find a record of Alfred's birth to check.)

Comment on the above is most welcome.

"Word came through yesterday that Mr James Thomas had died that mornin g at his home at Chatswood. Mr Thomas was a native of Pembrokeshire, W ales, and was 86 years of age. He came to Australia with his parents w hen quite a boy, and the family arrived on Monaro shortly after, in th e days when bullock drays were the main mode of conveyance. In later y ears Mr Thomas purchased the "Mona" property, near Bombala, and "Moore Springs" near Bibbenluke, and on the latter property he carried on gr azing pursuits until he was compelled b y failing health to retire. He lived in Bombala for some time before moving to Chatswood. His death at the great age of 86 years draws the curtain on deeds well done. A w idow, two daughters and five sons mourn their loss. Mrs Cooks of this town is a sister, and Mr J M Thomas of Bibbenluke a brother.

"The death was announce in Monday's Sydney papers os Mr Arthur S Thoma s, second surviving son of the late Mr James Thomas, of Chatswood, and formerly of Bombala. Arthur had an abscess on the arm, and this turne d to blood poisoning. He was living on his plantationat Santo in the N ew Hebrides, and his poisoned arm became so bad that removal to the ho spital at Vila, the principal town, was deemed advisable. Vila was som e distance away and the trip had to be made by boat, but bad weathwer sprung up and it was two weeks before the boat reached Vila. The arm w as then so bad that the doctor had to operate at once. Evidently the o peration was successfil and hopes were entertained for his recovery, f or it was than a month after that a cable was received by his people i n Chatswood to say that he had passed away. Mr Thomas was a single man aged 46 years. He was born in the Bombala district, and spent his ear ly life here and at bibbenluke. He served in the Boer war, and it was some little time after that he took up a plantation in the New Hebride s in company with his brother and Mr Maurice Witts, Confined as were h is activities in the Hebrides, still he did a lot of good for the plan ters and the natives, a good citizen trying to do good for his fellow man."

Email from Louise Alcock responding to a query from Daphne who emailed me re parents Annie Tivey

Hi John,

My container has finally arrived. Yay.

I really don't know how much more I can add to Annie the enigma.

Both the death certificates of Samuel and Phoebe state "3 males , 4 females, 1 male deceased, 1 female deceased" which totals 9 children. There are no names. I can't add them up.

The 1841 British census state the children of Samuel and Phoebe living with them are Joseph 7, Alfred 4, Sarah 2, Elizabeth 6 months.

On the ship Bermondsey, 1848, the children are listed as; Alfred 11, Sarah 9, Elizabeth 7, Harriet 11 months, James 14. I don't know if James is the Joseph from the 1841 census or not. Possibly as I don't know who James would otherwise be.The age is right.

The Monaro Pioneers website lists their children as; Alfred, Samuel, Sarah Ann, Elizabeth, Anne (m William Harris), Harriett, Ellen. They didn't elaborate fully on all the children meaning they didn't go into Anne's marriage and issue. Also, it still doesn't add up to 9 children.

I think this is why in my handwritten notes I had Ann as Phoebe's daughter. As a midwife I find it easier to believe Phoebe giving birth at 49 yrs with the problem of menopause and irregular periods (I've seen it happen much to the woman's horror), rather than Harriet giving birth at 13 years and getting pregnant at 12 years of age. Then there is the issue of menache. Girls in this present century are menstruating at this age and younger because it is believed to be due to increased hormones in our food system. The usual age of teenage girls in the 1860s would be closer to 16 - 18 years of age. But then again, there is documentation of very young girls birthing at 13 or 14 years of age in history (it's that bell curve!) such as King Henry VII whose mother, Margaret Beaufort, was 13 years old, and 7 months pregnant when her husband died...

(I would rather have a sister look after me who was young than a possibly cranky, tired, postmenopausal woman in her 50s.)

However, if oral history says that Harriet was Ann's mother and Jonas her father, then I guess I have to accept that.

Now for Jonas' wives and his death certificate. Now, the informant of his death was Harold M Alcock, my grandfather, who was 5 weeks old when his mother Harriet, died. He was not very accurate. Being the youngest I figure he would have been about 48 years old when Jonas died. He listed Emily as being 65 yrs old, so Annie would have been older yet again, and Annie being married the year after he was born and Harriet dying, I don't think Annie would have figured much in his life and perhaps this is why Annie was not listed on Jonas' death certificate. However, Jonas himself was the informant for Harriet's death certificate and hence Annie was listed but with no age. [My grandfather actually listed one of his own children from his first wife incorrectly on her death certificate - and her name was Annie too.]

As for Jonas' wives. My grandfather (Harold Mortimer, known as 'Mort') listed some errors on his father's death certificate with the wives, namely; Harriet Green, Emmaline Jane Chislett and Elizabeth Jane Waugh. In actual fact it was (according to the actual marriage certificates) Harriet Tivey 1867, Emmaline Jane Chislett Claffey 1886 (she was a widow so I'm not sure which was her maiden and which was her married name) and Elizabeth Jane (Jean on her death certificate) Gilchrist, 1912. She was also a widow and her death certificate has her father's name as Waugh.

No, Jonas didn't marry his niece. Emily Rose was Jonas' and Harriet's *first (umm, legal?) child born in 1868. She married William Small. The oral history that I have heard is that William Small was found by Jonas as a child crying on the side of a road when Jonas was working a bullock team. He brought him home and raised him - so the story goes. I know that later when William died his brother was meant to help Emily as they hadn't any children, but he didn't, and so Emily lived for a time with my parents and then with uncle Curly.

Two of Jonas' and Harriet's sons married sisters; Henry Caleb married Bernice Ralph, and Joseph Nehemiah married Florence Ralph. Now, Bernice and Florence were nieces of Jonas' second wife Emmaline. Got it? But wait, there's more...

Jonas and Emmaline also helped look after Margaret Lavell, who became my grandfather's (Harold Mortimer as above) second wife, and two of her uncles who were brothers married into the Alcock family also. Arthur James married Louisa Alcock - a daughter of Jonas and Harriet; and Sidney James married Lavinia Alcock who was a niece of Jonas.

I think that's about it for now. You may need to wrap your head around that! LOL. Told you they took in various children. I think they must have been very caring people.

Catch you again later,

Keep on searching

Email from Louise Alcock 23 August 2014 respending to queries about Annie from Daphne Jerabek of Mayfield NSW, a descendant of Annie's

Louise

  • My assumption that the Tom Bootle whom my Dad always talked about and who appears in Dad's WW1 diaries is really William J Bootle was based on there being only one male Bootle about Dad's age. That was until I noticed in a letter(undated) from my grandfather Edmund to Amy which says "Miss Daly knows "Billy Bootle" (Tom) well as he visits the house she stays. Knew the family is at Manly."

Even though this letter is undated I assume it was while Dad was at the war or lived away from home. This is because Edmund refers to yourself(Amy) and Betty a few times but no mention of Dad.

Extract from Concord Public School Centenary Booklet.

"When Edmund McMahon arrived to take charge of the school in August 1904 he denounced the residence as unsuitable, unsightly and unhealthy. ....................................There was a change of atmosphere at Concord Public School after 1904. This was partly because of Mr McMahon, who had the Knack of getting the community involved in the school, so that in 1906 Concord Council ploughed part of of the schoolground so the pupils could begin experimental agricultural plots. ......................................The year 1910 was rather chaotic at Concord Public School . Much to the regret of everyone, Mr McMahon was replaced as Headmaster by Thomas Cambourne just as the building work began."

Teaching career

Denise Hutchinson writes:

By the end of 1891 there was a severe depression in NSW and not until 1900 did the Education Dept have the same funds as 1891, and so had large backlog to make up. 1893-94 rigorous retrenchment reduced numbers of schools and teachers & other staff, and cut building expenditure, teachers' s salaries & a range of education facilkities, yet Edmund held his position.

Denise goes on:

1906 Sands Directory shows Edmund A McMahon at Salisbury Street Concord. Also an A.E. McMahon, headmaster, Concord Public School. In 1918 Edmund lived at Peats Ferry Road Hornsby. Source Sands Directory.

In 1930,33,36, 37 & 1943 he and Amelia lived at Lynwood, 16 Bridge Rd Hornsby. He was a teacher until 1933, after which he is shown as no occupation. Source - Electoral Rolls6
